On cream wove. Very faintly time stained. Short, aged seventy-four. An iconic image of the grand old man of Modern British etching in his studio. While training to be a civil engineer Short made his first etching, printed on the family mangle, in 1882.
The next year, after qualifying, he abandoned engineering and enrolled at the South Kensington National Art Training School (later re-named the Royal College of Art).
Short revived mezzotint and softground etching as original printmaking processes and as Director, and then first Professor of Engraving at the R.C.A., trained several generations of British etchers.
