Gibbings attended the Slade in 1912, and also joined Noel Rooke’s wood engraving classes at the Central School. Invalided out of the army in 1918, he set up as a freelance engraver. Along with Philip Hagreen, Lucien Pissarro, E M O’Rourke Dickey, Sydney Lee and Noel Rooke, Gibbings co-founded the Society of Wood Engravers in 1920, currently celebrating its Centenary. In recognition, my winter catalogue includes a large selection of wood engravings and woodcuts. Gibbings also owned and ran the Golden Cockerel Press from 1924-1933.
