A brilliant proof impression. Hollstein (as Goltzius) 8, second state of three, with the letters in the tablets but before the four lines of verse in the inscription space. New Hollstein R2, second state of three. Only four such proofs are recorded, all in museum collections. The design of this composition was formerly attributed to Denijs Calvaert (Antwerp, ca. 1540-1619), or alternatively Hendrik Goltzius, who was also considered the engraver. The unsigned preparatory drawing in the Metropolitan Museum has since been attributed to Johannes Stradanus.
