For a time the Genoese David worked as a set painter at La Fenice, Venice’s famous opera house. Popular theatre and Commedia dell’Arte inform his series of picturesque individuals who could be found in Venice. What is remarkable about these figures is that they are skillfully embellished with aquatint, a tonal technique new to Venitian prints.
