After the circle of Raphael. Bartsch XII, 33, 7; Karpinski in Nouvelles de l’estampe, 1976, Le maître ND de Bologne; Jenkins Prints at the Court of Fontainebleau, c. 1542-47, 2017, ND1, variant II. A crisp, clear, well-registered impression with relief. Full condition notes available on request. The woodcut relates closely to one of the tapestries in a series known as the Life of Christ, or the Scuola nuova, of which eleven still exist in the Vatican. Three separate panels make up the tapestry of the Massacre of the Innocents, with each image set against a different backdrop. In the woodcut the three are combined into one continuous scene with an entirely different background of ruins. This part of the composition may have been designed by Luca Penni. The extent of Raphael’s involvement in the series is unknown. Extremely rare.
