Simon Theobald
Simon Theobald has been established in London’s Mayfair since 2000, specializing in 19th and 20th Century European Art.
The gallery is open to visitors by appointment. Our range of services includes dealing, sourcing, consulting, building collections and investing in art. We also act on behalf of private clients, helping with loans of important paintings to international museum exhibitions, and negotiating consignments to the major auction houses. Operating from offices in the heart of London’s Mayfair art dealing district, and with close links to the leading European and American art centres, the business serves the needs of collectors, investors, museums and institutions around the globe. Our clients include important collectors and major institutions, such as the The British Museum in London, The National Gallery in Washington, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Los Angeles County Museum, and The Art Institute of Chicago.
Covering the period from circa 1870 to circa 1980, we have negotiated many notable sales in many different media across all the major artistic movements during this time. One of strongest areas is that of German Expressionism and we have handled sales involving most of the great masters of this field in the media of oil, drawings and in particular prints.
Amongst the oils Emil Nolde’s “Harvest Day” was negotiated to a private collector after being judiciously placed in a major Nolde retrospective exhibition at the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum in Madrid. In the more specialised area of prints we have placed many major images including Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s “Kopf des Kranken” and “Funf Kokotten”. We have also negotiated the sales of many works by Edvard Munch.
Simon Theobald is an authority on European, particularly German 19th and 20th Century art. He has more than thirty year’s experience in this field. He is a former senior director of Christie’s in London where he headed the department of Master Prints and initiated the auctions of German and Austrian Art.
Simon Theobald is an elected member of the Society of London Art Dealers (SLAD), the primary body of international art dealers in the UK, and of the International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA), the leading print dealers association in the world. He is also affiliated to the Confédération Internationale de Négotiants en Oeuvres d’Art (CINOA), the worldwide association of Fine Art Dealers.
