After graduating from Leicester College of Art in 1934, O’Connor spent the following three years at the Royal College of Art, where, through Eric Ravilious, he discovered and took up wood engraving.

After college he taught and made wood engravings for book illustrations, until the War, when he served in the R.A.F.

From 1948 to 1964 he was Principal of Colchester School of Art, and on retirement visiting lecturer at St Martins 1964-75, when he moved to Kirkcudbright, teaching 1977-1984 at Glasgow School of Art.

Most of O’Connor’s wood engravings were made as book illustrations, sometimes to texts he wrote himself, and were printed and published by The Rocket Press, Blewbury, Oxon, run by Jonathan Stephenson. Separate signed proofs were also issued.

This pribnt, one of a series of four featuring London parks and gardens, is on thin smooth japan.
