The series 'Calming Views of the Huangshan Mountain' was inspired by Mila Morton’s visit to the mountain range in eastern China during her art studies in the region. In Morton’s unique approach to the mountainscape, the sharp peaks are abstracted, transformed into light and airy forms that stretch across a wide expanse of Xuan paper. As the rice paper is very fragile, the monotype process requires careful variation of the pressure applied. This allows Morton to alternate between soft touches and the deeper colour which accentuates the grand, angular forms of the landscape.
