In the ‘Leap’ series, Rupert Whale’s freehand squeegee screenprinting technique is at its most gentle, using pastel tones and carefully controlling the lines of colour. The meandering curves of the overlaid ink and charcoal marks burst onto the paper, a vibration that disrupts the serenity of colours yet offers us a makeshift horizon line, drawing us into the distance.
