This is plate 8 from the celebrated symbolist series “Suite de Paysages”. Inspired by the surroundings at Vézelay, the artist depicted canals, pools, forests, trees. In accordance with his stated intention, he concentrated on mood rather than on detail, taking the Symbolist approach of idealising nature. Dulac intended to capture the fleeting emotions rather than the transient effects of nature.
