Robert Smith was a marine painter and etcher who trained at Lambeth. He first exhibited in 1906.
He worked for the Royal Navy as a clerk from 1903, becoming an Able Seaman in 1905, and lieutenant in 1918. During the War years he spent some time on Dreadnought battleships, taking part in the Battle of Jutland. He painted the official pictures of the Battle of Jutland for the Admiralty. The Imperial War Museum holds a number of his works.
His service at sea also inspired a number of etchings. Smith was a foundation member of the Society of Graphic Art in 1919.
Printed in brown-black ink on cream laid paper. Slight cockling.
