The image in this original lithograph promoting Matisse's 1956 exhibition is from Nature morte au magnolia, which he painted in 1941. At this time, he was working predominantly on still lifes and studio interiors, including Interior with an Etruscan Vase (1940), The Romanian Blouse (1940), and Anemones (1941). These paintings focus on arranged objects, flowers, and domestic settings, and were executed in oil.
