In 1930, Matisse was commissioned by Dr Albert Barnes to create a large-scale mural for the Barnes Foundation in Pennsylvania. Working between 1930 and 1933, he developed one of the defining compositions of his career, returning to the theme of dance and exploring it on an architectural scale.
This lithograph reproduces that composition in panoramic format. To the best of our knowledge, it was produced in 1986 for a retrospective exhibition in Paris, reflecting the museum’s role in presenting and preserving Matisse’s work.
