Kokoschka and his wife fled to England in 1938, where they spent the War years and much of the ensuing 15 years. In 1947 he was naturalised British, but in 1953 he returned to Europe and settled in Villeneuve in Switzerland, where he was based for the rest of his life.
On a return visit to London in 1967, Kokoschka made many sketches from a boat, the Nove. This original lithograph is from the suite of 9 related lithographs London from the River Thames, published by the Marlborough Gallery 1967, in an edition of 75 on Rives wove paper. Signed in pencil and numbered 53/75. Faint residual stains at the top right corner and at right edge in the borders.
