Monogrammed with the butterfly in the plate. Annotated in an unknown hand '3HM' [Howard Mansfield] lower left margin and '1.(ugt 25)'lower right margin and initialed 'OEX' Obach & Co. was a prominent London art gallery located at 168 New Bond Street. They were significant players in the print market during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and had a close professional relationship with Whistler.

Stock Marking: The "oex" is part of their internal stock-coding system. It was often written in pencil, sometimes accompanied by a stock number. verso.

Provenance: Howard Mansfield to Harris Whittemore to a family friend as a wedding gift in 1942. In "Shipbuilder's Yard," Whistler returns to the intricate maritime themes of the Thames, though with a shift toward the more atmospheric and simplified style of his later work. This etching depicts a bustling shipyard where the skeletal frames of emerging vessels create a complex web of lines against the horizon.
