Champon/Rouault 288.l,Published by Ambroise Vollard, Paris, printed on Montval laid paper. Vollard was instrumental in pushing Rouault to translate his thick, "stained-glass" painting style into the medium of print. Automne successfully replicates the heavy black outlines and luminous, layered colors characteristic of his oil paintings.

Composition: The work features a group of nudes in a landscape, a recurring theme for Rouault that blends classical pastoral subjects with his unique, somewhat melancholic expressionism.

Process: To achieve the deep, saturated tones seen in the browser viewport screenshot, Rouault used multiple plates and complex aquatint layering, which allowed for tonal gradation
