Perhaps the rarest inclusion in this exhibition, The Tall Bridge is a technical tour de force. Utilizing the difficult lithotint process to emulate the tonal washes of his celebrated Nocturnes, Whistler captures the Thames with a liquid elegance. Because the magazine for which it was intended failed before publication, very few impressions survived. This delicate printing, showing the layered washes and the butterfly signature in the stone, offers a rare glimpse into Whistler’s most experimental period in the lithographic medium.
