Dodgson 390.xvii/xix. Edition of 40 in this state (total 151 impressions in 19 states. A masterpiece of structural precision, Manhattan Excavation (1923–1928) captures the monumental birth of the Hotel Roosevelt at Madison Avenue and 45th Street. Begun from nature on June 4, 1923, Bone spent five years refining this drypoint to its seventeenth state, masterfully translating the chaotic depths of a New York construction site into a rhythmic, geometric symphony of steel and shadow. It stands as the most dramatic of Bone's American works, documenting the Herculean engineering that defined the soaring verticality of the 1920s Manhattan skyline
