Chila Kumari Singh Burman has generously created Without Us There Is No Britain, 2021, a limited edition print on the first anniversary of the Tate Britain Winter Commission, Remembering a Brave New World, 14 November 2020 – 28 February 2021.
Burman’s Tate Britain Winter Commission, which opened during Diwali, the Festival of Light, transformed the gallery’s façade into a colourful exploration of Hindu mythology, Bollywood imagery, colonial history and personal memories. For her limited edition, Without Us There Is No Britain, 2021, Burman has re-imagined a preparatory drawing for one of the neon light installations from Remembering a Brave New World as a vibrant and sparkling silkscreen print.
Without Us There Is No Britain, 2021, depicts a figure with raised fist, inspired by the issue one cover of Mukti, a feminist magazine by and for Asian women published in the UK in 1983. It combines a powerful message with a celebration of what Burman describes as Bollywood-inspired ‘bling’. Each print has been embellished with metallic foil, hand-applied paper quill hearts and a spot of fuchsia glitter. The limited edition comes unframed and is signed and numbered by the artist.
