Carborundum is an intaglio process similar to aquatint in which carborundum grit (silicum carbide) is applied in thick paste to a metal plate. The ink clings to its granular surface, creatinbg a textural image which has the apperance of embossing.
Here, Joe Tilson combines screenprint with carborundum to create texture in his Stones of Venice San Pantalon, Veniesia (2012). The black diamonds are formed from carborundum to provide a textured contrast to the silkscreened stripes.
