An exceptionally rare six-colour lithograph produced to mark the centenary of Galerie Kléber, Paris, in 1952. This example was printed avant la letter before the addition of exhibition text, during the final stage of production, after the image had been signed off but before release.

The composition is inspired by Matisse’s late cut-out practice, developed when he started working with painted paper and scissors. These forms are directly translatable into lithography, maintaining the clarity of colour and structure that characterise his final work.
