This lithographic poster after Dufy, signed in the plate by Atelier Mourlot, Paris, was created for a 1959 exhibition of paintings and gouaches by Raoul Dufy at Galerie Bernheim-Jeune. The image illustrates the Changing of the Guard at St James’s Palace, London. The exhibition was held in support of a French mutual aid society for artists and intellectual workers, established to provide financial and welfare assistance to those in the cultural professions.
A regular visitor to London, Dufy returned often to its pageantry, Royal Ascot and the Changing of the Guard, captured with his characteristic lightness and colour.
This poster is possibly a working proof as it shows the registration marks - annotations used during the initial printing process. It has been backed onto linen for conservation.
