This artist is one of the most internationally acclaimed living artists in Japan. She died in Tokyo in 2021 aged 107 creating up to the end. All her works are based on abstract but dynamic brush strokes originating from Japanese calligraphy. To Shinoda, the concept and utilisation of the untouched space on the paper is as important as the brush strokes and becomes one with the image. Her lithographs are stone-based and she uses traditional Japanese sumi ink for the brush strokes. She adds hand-colouring to each of her prints in the edition, in this using gold ink. She completed her last lithograph in 2007, and this is one of her last lithos from that year. Her works are in the permanent collections of major museums including the British Museum and Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY.
