Prairie (yellow curtain) precis:
This lithograph print by Louise Giovanelli continues the artist’s visualisation of curtains and drapes as primary subject matter. In Prairie (2024), a close portrait view partially abstracts lavish hanging golden curtains which gather on the floor. Unable to see beyond the partition and with context ambiguous, Giovanelli’s curtains invite imaginative and associative thinking across its undulant surface.
The print shares its title with the artist’s large-scale painting. At more than five metres wide, Prairie (2022) focuses on the liminality demarcated by the cascading fabric of the curtain, where space is merely alluded to under a cast of anticipation and mystery.
For Giovanelli, the curtain is a device through which to explore formal possibilities of colour, along with qualities of light and variabilities of texture. Collectively, this attention to brilliance, shade and textural vastitude evokes the atmospheric expansiveness indicated by the title. Hanging uninterrupted, Giovanelli’s curtains shimmer with promise.
