Samson Kambalu has generously produced three limited editions on the occasion of the exhibition, A World in Common: Contemporary African Photography at Tate Modern, 6 July 2023 – 14 January 2024.

Kambalu’s limited editions for Tate are part of an ongoing series inspired by his childhood memory of collecting bubble gum cards of the flags of the world. In the past 20 years he has travelled all over the world, developing his work in different cities and collecting national flags on his phone as he goes. With an interest in the things that connect us rather than divide us, these flags are shuffled, manipulated and reimagined using smartphone technology. The resulting abstract patterns and vibrant colours recall the tribal markings of Kuba textiles. Giving visual form to the transitional politics of nation states, Kambalu’s flags question the limits of national identity.
