A watercolour painter, designer, etcher and wood engraver, Hill's work rarely comes on the market, probably because he continued in full time employment as a clerk, then book keeper and accountant for the same London firm until retirement age.
It was probably after WWI, in which he served in the 6th Cycle Brigade of the Territorial Army, in Northumberland , that he attended classes at Putney Art School and the Central. Most of his recorded etchings date from the 1920’s and '30’s, and he exhibited from 1926-1930 at the Walker Gallery, Liverpool and Manchester Art Gallery annual salons.
After WWII, and his official retirement, Hill moved to a cottage in Stroud, where he set up a studio, with his own press. His editions were always quite small. Despite failing eyesight, he continued to produce etchings, woodcuts and wood carvings, through the 1950’s but about 1960, no longer able to manage on his own, he moved to his daughter’s.
Hill lived till just short of his hundredth birthday.
