An engraver and publisher, Hendrick van Schoel was active in Rome c1595-1622. This engraving is from the set of Four Seasons, designed by Hans Bol (1534-1593), who was influenced by the landscapes of his contemporary Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and shared his delight in depicting the seasons and the months of the year.
When Brueghel died in 1569 he had completed drawings for Spring and Summer, for a set of Four Seasons for the Antwerp publisher Hieronymous Cock. Cock commissioned Bol to complete the set. In later years Bol drew or painted further series of the Seasons, depicting the characteristic activities of each.
