Purdy & Figg

Purdy Rubin and Charlotte Figg of Purdy & Figg, the UK's fastest-growing natural cleaning brand, have been loyal and longstanding visitors to the Print Fair. For our Christmas newsletter they have both selected their favourite prints from the LOPF platform, featuring eight artists not to be missed by collectors...
  • Purdy Rubin's Selection

Four artists whose work I would recommend to new collectors...

Having run the Purdy Hicks Gallery, I know how important early support can be for young, emerging artists. My selection includes Verbatim, an artist-led collective showcasing innovative contemporary printmaking; and India Printmaker House, an online platform supporting emerging printmakers, particularly those working in India. To balance these, I've chosen a print from the brilliant Tate (who also offer an amazing selection of reasonably priced prints on their website) and Hommage, a specialist in vintage lithographs and exhibition posters who have been showcasing posters in pop-ups. Together, I hope these choices reflect both the excitement of discovering new artists and the value of collecting affordable prints across different generations and traditions.

    • Ellie Hayward, insideout, 2021

      Verbatim

Ellie Hayward, 'Inside Out', 2021, Aquatint and photo-etching £950 unframed

Verbatim champions experimental printmaking, and Ellie Hayward's work exemplifies this spirit. Inside Out is a sculptural, atmospheric print exploring empty and liminal architectural spaces. Through aquatint and photo-etching, Hayward creates a quietly powerful sense of interiority and structure-an exciting example of innovative printmaking by an emerging artist.

    • Jaimini Jariwala, Threads of House III, 2024

      India Printmaker House

Jaimini Jariwala, 'Threads of House III', 2024, Cyanotype and stitch on drawing paper (unique print) £300

India Printmaker House offers vital visibility to emerging artists globally. I was drawn to Jaimini Jariwala's Threads of House III for its delicate, expressive mark-making and its striking blue-and-white palette. Jariwala works by removing threads from fabric, leaving ghostly textile impressions that become part of the cyanotype image. The combination of photography, fabric processes, and hand-stitching gives the piece a beautifully tactile and contemplative quality.

    • Howard Hodgkin, Indian Leaves, 1982/2024

      Tate

Howard Hodgkin, 'Indian Leaves', 1982/2024, Lithograph on Japanese Gampi Torinoko paper £600

The Tate offers editions by major artists at accessible prices, helping many collectors take their first steps. Hodgkin's Indian Leaves is joyful, vivacious, and full of the rich colour for which he is celebrated. The delicate Gampi Torinoko paper enhances the work's luminosity, and the print reflects Hodgkin's long and meaningful connection with India.

    • Constantin (Kostia) Terechkovitch, Galerie Paul Pétridès, Paris, 1953

      Hommage

Constantin (Kostia) Terechkovitch, 'Galerie Paul Petrides, Paris', 1953, Colour lithograph £600

Hommage specialises in original vintage posters and  lithographs that blend fine art, design, and history, and this poster by Terechkovitch is both expressive and elegant.

    • Jean Cocteau, Salons de la TWA, Nice - Côte d'Azur, Paris , 1954

      Hommage

Jean Cocteau, 'Salons de la TWA, Nice, Côte d’Azur, Paris', 1954, Colour lithograph £700

Cocteau’s imaginative design captures his multidisciplinary creativity. Both these prints presented by Hommage are visually charming and illustrate a window into the vibrant and wonderful world of post-war European art and design.

  • Charlotte Figg's Selection

    An intuitive approach to buying...

I am drawn to images with an enduring appeal and which have energy and or a little mystery. I like large scale, bold colour contrasts but I also like smaller monotype images which invite you to come closer and inspect, wondering what is going on.

I love the London Original Print Fair as it truly offers a choice of artists and images to satisfy my taste. My Collector's Choice selection includes works from Long & RylePaul Stolper Gallery, and RAW Editions.

    • Cliona Doyle, Camelia Japonica, 2022

      Long & Ryle

Cliona Doyle, 'Camelia Japonica', 2022, Carborundum print, 133 x 107 cm POA

A large scale print on beautiful paper.  I love the size of this, which meant it had to be printed on two separate pieces of paper, which adds to its delicacy and connection with nature.

    • Brian Eno, Untitled, 2025

      Paul Stolper Gallery

Brian Eno, Untitled, 2025, Etching on Somerset Velvet 400gsm, with deckled edges, 65 x 65 cm POA

Partly because I love what Brian Eno stands for, but also for the energy in these images which I can imagine making a sound that I can't hear, but would like if I did.

    • Hugh Buchanan, Moonlit Window, 2024

      Long & Ryle

Hugh Buchanan, 'Moonlit Window', 2024, Household emulsion on corduroy, 86.36 x 63.5 cm POA

Apart from the mysterious and haunting image, I love the idea of using household emulsion printed on corduroy, which gives a velvety, high contrast image so reminiscent of a night scene at full moon.

    • Tom Hammick, Living Air, 2024

      RAW Editions

Tom Hammick, 'Living Air', 2024, Reduction woodcut in colours On Saunders Waterford wove, 97.6 x 69 cm £6,000

This has it all: scale, vibrant colour contrasts and mystery, in a natural setting.
